Integrity

If youhave integrity, nothing else matters.

If you don’t have integrity….

Nothing else matters.

Measuring Life

Life isn’t measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the places that take our breath way.

(ProfJameson comment:I have seen this quoted as the “moments” in instead of the “places”, but being a passionate lover of travel, I find this version more compelling. I am always looking for good travel quotes, they seem to be harder to find than my other categories.

Being Good

A live body is not one that never gets hurt, but one that can to some extent repair itself. In the same waya Christian is not man who never goes wrong, but a man who is abled to repent andpick himself up and begin over again after each stumble-because the Christ-life is inside him, repairing him all the time, enabling him to repeat (in some degree) the kind of voluntary death which Christ Himself carried out.

C.S. Lewis

quote

Blue Like Jazz

There is something beautiful about a billion stars held steady by a God who knows what He is doing. (They hang there, the stars, like notes on a page of music, free-form verse, silent mysteries swirling in the blue like jazz.) And as I lay there, it occurred to me that God is up there somewhere. Of course, I had always known He was, but this time I felt it, I realized it, the way a person realizes they are hungry or thirsty. The knowledge of God seeped out of my brain and into my heart. I imagined Him looking down on this earth, half angry because His beloved mankind had cheated on Him, had committed adultery, and yet hopelessly in love with her, drunk with love for her.

(Donald Miller is the person who clarified for me what I had always know. Faith and belief is more a matter of the heart than the brain. You can believe all the right things in in your head and not know God or have faith.)

Fact and Theory

One of the greatest tragedies in science is the slaying of a great theory by an ugly fact
(I find this is very often true of the clever mechanisms discovered by the pharmaceutical industry, only to be studied and be found that they don’t, in fact, work. Prof Jameson’s comment)

Inborn Cravings

But know also, man has an inborn craving for medicine. Generations of heroic dosing have given his tissues such a thirst for drugs. As I once before remarked, the desire to take medicine is one feature which distinguishes man, the animal, from his fellow creatures. It is really one of the most serious difficulties with which we have to contend. Even in minor ailments, which would yield to dieting or to simple home remedies, the doctor’s visit is thought to be complete without the prescription.

Dialogue with Jesus

The way John writes about Jesus makes you feel like the sum of our faith is a kind of constant dialogue with Jesus about whether or not we love Him.
(like Peter’s dialogue after the resurrection- editor’s note)

Systematic Theology

It makes you wonder if guys like John the Evangelist and Paul and Moses wouldn’t look at our systematic theology charts, our lists and mathematical formulas, and scratch their heads to say “well, it’s technically true, it just isn’t meaningful.

(Editor’s comment: like microsoft help, which is technically correct and practically useless,  editors comment)
